Jim kit-built this machine (a J&J Tukan)
in '97 and has flown it for about 250 hrs. His airstrip and hanger are in his back yard
although he does take it out occasionally (fly-in's, rally's etc). |

|
The wing is an Air Creation Mild (160 sq ft,
70% double surface) and mounted in a two axis configuration. While difficult to see here,
the steering bar is mounted from above to allow positioning immediately in front of the
pilot. While in flight, pushing it forward gently causes ascent, pulling it back
causes increased speed. The throttle was at the right foot. A six gallon gas tank is used
without oil injection (has to be pre-mixed) . |

|
Jim selected one of the world's most popular
engines to power his craft. The Austrian made 2-cycle Rotax 582 66HP engine. It is liquid
cooled and has dual carbs and ignition, also the 'C'box and a clutch for the rotor. |

|
Jim's instrument gauge reads about six
parameters (tachometer, carburetor heat etc) with warning lights. Mounted to the right is
an air speed indicator. |

|
Here is his Global Positioning System. I've
heard several refences made to "knowing the country like the back of your hand-- 'til
I get in the air". This shows speed, course deviation, bearing, time enroute, and
altitude. These are available at Walmart. |
